Building in a World Heritage site is a topical issue. Historic settlement areas often present difficult challenges for municipalities and owners. With the help of the Wachau Zones, development plans are elaborated which simplify dealing with historic buildings in line with World Heritage requirements.

The concept of the Wachau Zones is one of the central elements for preserving the typical building culture of the Wachau as a World Heritage site. Four pilot municipalities of the Wachau (Rossatz-Arnsdorf, Dürnstein, Mautern, Bergern im Dunkelsteinerwald) have already implemented the Wachau Zones. The goal is to elaborate and apply the Wachau Zones in all municipalities of the Wachau World Heritage site.

The Wachau Zones are based on a walk-through with experts who analyse and document the existing stock of buildings. Together with the local population, the key features of the existing buildings to be preserved are incorporated into a development plan. In this way, the Wachau Zones take effect in law and the historic townscapes are protected.
